  • Quote:" Pope Benedict XVI says that condom use is acceptable "in certain cases", notably "to reduce the risk of infection" with HIV, in a book due out Tuesday, apparently softening his once hardline stance.

In a series of interviews published in his native German, the 83-year-old Benedict is asked whether "the Catholic Church is not fundamentally against the use of condoms."

"It of course does not see it as a real and moral solution," the pope replies.

It follows that events or policies that discourage travelers from flying — and encourage them to drive — will result in increased injuries and death.

In fact, three professors at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., produced a study in 2005 showing that 242 driving fatalities a month could be attributed to travelers switching from flying to driving in the years immediately after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

// In other words, having ridiculous security measures that push people away from flying and towards driving result in the equivalent of a major air disaster every month. The terrorists have won.
