Twins Vs. White Sox (09/23/2008)
Powered by: CoveritLive

7:06
Got this up just in time to see the opening pitch

7:07
I am at work still, so there might be a few interruptions. Â I work until 9pm, form there I can’t get back to the internet for a while, so the liveblog might just stop.

7:12
Scott Baker is the pitcher I have the most confidence in right now, Liriano a very close second. Â Baker, Liriano and Slowey are pitchers I think are shoe-ins next year for the rotation. Â Humber and Blackburn would be my bets for the other two spots. Â Perkins I think will find himself in the bullpen.

7:14
One of my pet peeves watching the Twins, we don’t get any meaningful offensive stats. Â A batting average doesn’t tell me anything anymore. Â On the pitching side, we get WHIP, ERA, SO, BB, IP and even get a general idea about whether they are GB, FB or power pitchers

7:15
Adding OPS would go a long way in fixing my grievences

7:16
Baker gets a 1-2-3 inning, very nice. Â Looks like he’s “on”

7:19
Since I’m watching on TV, I’m being forced to watch a lot of political ads, Coleman and Franken are really going at it. I think Franken is running better ads.  I wonder about the veracity of the claims  in Franken’s ads, but as a poltical hack, I can tell you they’re good ads.

7:20
Span is leading off, which is a good choice. Â It took a long time to find a decent lead off guy, but Span works. Â (Though, he’s not perfect, Mauer with the high OBP would probably be the sabremetric pick)

7:21

Span out looking, the ball was too inside

7:22
Alexi Casilla in the number two spot, grounds out. Â Casilla is regressing back to his career means, but I think there’s a good chance he can be an average 2nd baseman next year, which would be huge for the Twins

7:22
Vazquez looks tough.

7:23
Mauer might win another batting title, which would be a remarkable feat

7:23
But Mauer grounds out

7:30
When it comes to the White Sox, it’s just a matter of time before they hit a homerun. Â They hope is the home runs come with nobody on the basepaths

7:31
Ken Griffey Jr is up. Â Not had a good run with the White Sox

7:32
Thome scores on a DP

7:34

Taking a look at KGJR’s stats, looks like he’s just getting a little unlucky. Â He should be hitting more HRs than he is

7:40
They plate is pretty wide today, which is generally how umpires call it.

7:40
Kubel kicks the Twins into a one run lead with a big HR. Â

7:41
I’m a huge Kubel fan, I don’t see how the Twins don’t let him play next year

7:42
Delmon Young keeps the rally going. Â I think Young is another guy who gets unfairly criticised in the blogesphere

7:45
Javier Vazquez is somewhere in the top 10-15 SPs in the AL. Â Good xFIP, PRC. Â The White Sox have really built this team on pitching

7:46
As far as WPA, the Sox’s Pen and Rotation are responsible for the team’s present position. Â Their hitters have a negative WPA

7:48
Philosophically, I believe in station to station baserunning, so Delomon Young getting into a rundown on the contact play at third really shivers my bristles

7:49
And the rally ends. Â I know there’s some stats out there which could either disprove or prove this, but I think the Twins ran themselves out of a lot of rallies.

7:55
I really like how Baker is looking tonight. Â He’s working swiftly and is around the strike zone, won’t be a lot of free passes tonight

7:58
Twins rank 6th in CS and rank 21st in SB%, so this team is terrible on the basepaths

8:00
Setting my priorities, I will be liveblogging the Presidential debates on Friday, though that is subject to change. Â I really intend to liveblog the debate but I might be traveling that day.

8:01
So really, I don’t know if I’ll be liveblogging the presidential debates

8:07
At least, the one on this Friday. Â The others I should be able to do

8:10
How good is Jim Thome?

8:11
Some might look at his BA of .245 and might not be impressed

8:11
But I see the fat SLG%, 33 HRs and a good looking isolated OBP

8:12
More proof BA sucks

8:13
Baker has a 1-2-3 fourth inning. Â Good pitching might make these games pretty boring

8:14
I talked about this on the podcast yesterday, but I really believe the Twins need a sweep. Â Anything less won’t cut it

8:17
Kubel with a triple, nice. Â When it comes to Kubel, I put my money where my mouth was, I spent nearly 100 dollars buying a lit of his high end RC, autos and #’d (though I’m a bit embarassed to admit to collecting BB cards) and so far I’ve made about 150 dollars on the cards. Â And I still have over half of them

8:19
Others I “invested in” at the end of last year: Slowey, Span, Backburn, Perkins. Â I’ve doubled my small investment with those guys (again, all high end stuff) and I still have about a quarter of those cards remaining.

8:20
Oh yeah, and I got a lot of Neshek stuff, which hurts. Â However, I’m “holding” on Neshek. Â I’m giving him until his 30th b-day.

8:20
This is an exciting game (you know, as long as my team continues to score)

8:22

It was a “safety squeeze” play that scored Young, perfecty executed (except Punto’s head first slide). Â Squeezes are about 80% effective, so I don’t see why they’re so rare.

8:23

While I really like the liveblog tool, it’s a little dry without reader interaction. Â Which is one of the few reasons to be jealous of bloggers with high traffic

8:28
I was always told to keep my expectations low (and my goals, for that matter) and so far, it’s working. Â The Twins have already exceeded my expectations

8:33
What would I do if I were Ozzie Guillen right now? Â I’d stick with Vazquez until he hit 100 pitches. Â Then I’d throw in a bottom of the barrell guy, a call up or the mop up guy, to pitch the bulk of the game. Â I would’nt call this giving up on the game though. Â The Sox are just two of three swings away from a tie score and like I said, the Sox are going to get a HR or two (223 HRs so far this year for the White Sox as a team). Â Let the offense do the grinding, not the pitching.

8:34
Besides, with the Twins bullpen, no lead is safe

8:36
“Under promise, over deliver”
“Keep your goals low and attainable”
“C’s get degrees”

Those were some of the bits of wisdom I picked up early in life from those around me. Â Following that advice is probably why I haven’t crawled above the federal poverty line in three years (and only done it twice since I turned 18)

8:37
And it wasn’t from my family or upbringing, my parents were not the “let the tides take you wherever” types. Â I just hung around the wrong people for a long time

8:41
One thing liveblogging is great at, making the time fly

8:42
Normally I’m bored out of my mind at work, but right now, I’m shocked how fast the night has gone.

8:43
According to my stats thingee, only one person clicked on my liveblog.

8:46
My previous Twins liveblog was “replayed” by 6 people. Â Those numbers are pretty horrendous even by my standards

8:46
Bases loaded, always really dangerous with the White Sox

8:53
Mauer and Morneau, when those guys are hitting well, the Twins have a difficult time losing

9:02

Just about time to wrap things up. Â I’ll see about posting a post-game post on my twins blog after the game. Â http://twinsencyclicus.blogspot.com

9:03
The Twins look in control and a win today makes the next week look a lot better. Â A loss today and I would have been waving the white flag on the season

9:08
And I’m out, twins are up by six and that lead should be safe.

9:09
Look for future liveblogs coming soon. Â Like tomorrow
